Matthew 1:18-23
Today is Friday,
September 8, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Nativity of the
Blessed Mother is celebrated as a liturgical feast in the Roman Catholic calendar
nine months after the Solemnity of her Immaculate Conception, celebrated on
December 8.
We Catholics have a very
deep devotion to the Blessed Mother for the reason that she is our universal
mother. The respect and devotion that we give to her is the same respect and
devotion that we gave to our own mothers.
In our Gospel today,
Joseph was about to leave quietly the Blessed Virgin Mary whom he found pregnant
already but the Lord intervened through an angel and told Joseph not to leave
Mary for the child that she carries in her womb was conceived by the Holy
Spirit.
Joseph humbly listened
to the Lord. He did not left Mary and the salvific plan of God was realized
with the birth of Jesus.
Mary’s role in the plan
of salvation is significant because without her there will be no Jesus who will
redeemed us from the bondage of sin.
As we celebrate the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, let us not refuse God’s call for us. We
have nothing to lose but gain everything if we would only listen to Him.
Let us always remember this: Mary is
favoured by God. When we honour her, we are doing only what God has done for
her.
Happy Birthday, Mama
Mary… God bless us… Amen…
